What criteria do you have for choosing the right provider for registering a domain? (not hosting, only the domain)

So far, I can only see the different pricing and features of the DNS manager but have no idea what I have to pay attention in addition to this.

How to know about the quality of the provider's nameserver and could there be differences in speed concerns.

Background: The hosting itself incl. webspace, server etc. is separate from the domain and I am not going to book the domain with the same hoster as the webspace/server hoster.
